Nintendo Switch OLED is Here! But...

There's something to be said about the pre-announcement hype-up process surrounding the gaming industry. The sheer potential awesomeness of an upcoming product can often go sky-high, and we're sorry to report that the newly-announced Nintendo Switch OLED model fails to meet our expectations.

That's right - we're getting a bigger and significantly upgraded screen. However, Nintendo has announced no hardware upgrades of any sort, which means no 4K, no Nvidia DLSS implementation, and no frame-rate increases of any kind. Bummer, right?

Now, don't get us wrong - playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons on an OLED screen is going to be pretty darn amazing. But we had way higher hopes than that, and we're sure you, too, would agree.

As it stands, here's a comprehensive list of improvements Nintendo has already announced for the OLED model of Switch:

  • 7-inch OLED display with thinner bezels
  • An improved stand with a wider array of positions
  • 64 GB of onboard flash storage
  • Two available colors - black and white

No, really - that's pretty much it. The upgraded model of Nintendo Switch is set and primed to launch on October 8th, which is great for new owners, but note that this is hardly the sort of thing we'd recommend to previous owners of a regular Switch console.

Lite? Maybe. Otherwise - that's going to be a nope from us.

Other noteworthy additions include a LAN port included in the upgraded model of the Switch dock - no extra adapter needed - as well as a slight visual redesign. All in all, it looks great, to be sure, but we were hoping for so much more.

In other, more closely related news to AC itself, there's really not much to say. Nintendo's been suspiciously mum as to what's up with New Horizons, and it's been a long few weeks since the game received its last content update.

So - stay tuned, we suppose!
