Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Super Mario Update - Hopes and Expectations
Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Super Mario Update is coming... eventually. That's really just about all we know about it so far! However, a severe lack of concrete information has never stopped us from being cheeky and coming up with theories on what's to come.
Much like our previous Animal Crossing datamine coverage, this article will mainly consist of theorycrafting and well-wishing. That's simply the nature of the beast, since Nintendo's been extremely close-lipped when it comes to the upcoming Super Mario content for New Horizons.
Other than, y'know, letting us know that it is, in fact, in production.
When is the New Horizons Super Mario Update coming?
According to Nintendo's 35th Super Mario Anniversary Direct, New Horizons is set to receive a batch of Mario-themed furniture sometime in March. As you may or may not know, one of the few major criticisms directed at New Horizons at launch was that it did away with a number of furniture sets that had become mainstay over the years. The Mario Theme was one of these sets.
Now that we finally have a confirmation that we'll be able to turn our New Horizons homes into Mushroom Kingdom villas, it's hype-o-clock. But! You might be wondering: "What Super Mario furniture will we even be getting in New Horizons?" To that, we can only say that we're just as curious as you are.
The stitching featured above comes from Animal Horizons: City Folk, which had a full selection of Mario-themed items to choose from. If we were betting people, we'd say that we expect for the following furniture to make an appearance for sure:
- 1-Up Mushroom
- Super Mushroom
- Starman
- Super Starman
- regular Block
- ? Block
- Coin
- Fire Flower
- Green Shell
- Pipe
- Block Flooring
But, again, that's just our (mostly) uneducated guess. New Horizons will surely require items of considerably higher fidelity than we had been used to, so we'd hardly be surprised if a full batch of all-new stuff was to appear sometime next month.
Don't forget that Nintendo is sure to have a more comprehensive announcement later on. We're reasonably sure they'll celebrate the occasion with a trailer, even, so there's going to be a small preview down the line for sure.
What else will the Super Mario Update have?
Aside from the furniture itself, there's good reason we should expect for the Super Mario Update to push the envelope a tad. New Horizons does, after all, have a stronger focus on character customization and we'd be really weirded out if we didn't get a batch of Mario-themed clothing. Even if the unthinkable happens and Nintendo doesn't end up releasing official clothes, chances are that you'll be able to find full themed sets right here at AC Runway. Neat, right?
It would also be pretty neat if there was a special Super Mario event to celebrate the release of these items. The game already supports popping baloons. Why not make Brick-shaped baloons and have the items drop as DIY Blueprints? The potential issue would lie in long-term availability of these items, but we're sure Nintendo could easily bring them back from time to time as part of timed events and whatnot.
Don't forget to keep your expectations in check, though!
It's worth keeping in mind that it's entirely possible all we'll get is... well, furniture. That's really the only thing Nintendo's confirmed so far, and it's not like New Horizons hasn't got plenty of other stuff going on in the background.
Having said that, even if we were only to get Mario-themed furniture and literally nothing else, we're sure plenty of players will be thrilled to finally have this little slice of gaming history available in the latest and greatest Animal Crossing, too.
We'll be on top of new updates as they come out, but in the meantime, stay tuned!
