Animal Crossing Sea Creatures Update: Go swimming and gather new animals!

It's the end of the week, and the awesome Animal Crossing Sea Creatures update is here to keep us busy! As you may or may not know, Nintendo's smash-hit has just received a slew of neat new features, not least of which is swimming! That's right: you can now wade into open water and gather a selection of all-new sea creatures to keep yourself busy, and earn some Bells along the way!

Now, the update is pretty darn big! We'd even go so far as to compare it with, say, Risk of Rain 2 and its upcoming 1.0 content release! As we said: big. If swimming has you concerned about getting your drip... dripped, fret not: your virtual digs won't be damaged in any way, shape, or form! Your AC streetwear will be safe and sound whenever you decide to trot on ahead into water. We'll explain how the Animal Crossing swimming works below, as well as provide you with an idea of where to go to gather each of the new animals!

New content and features in Animal Crossing: New Horizons swimming update

We advise you to first watch the trailer above, which showcases all the important new content and features that is part of the Animal Crossing swimming update! The main tagline is simple and straight-forward enough, though: "The Ocean opens up!"

First things first, both swimming and diving are now available as mobility features! No longer will you have to slosh around at the edges of the ocean: just head on over and jump inside for a quick and neat cool-down! Virtual, sure, but a cool-down nonetheless. Swimming functions much the same as all of Animal Crossing. You've got your isometric-ish perspective and the usual set of controls. Diving is a bit more interesting, though, because the camera switches over directly above your character, allowing you to dive for sea creatures and treasure. Exciting, right?

Your growing collection of seasonal sea creatures can then be donated to Blathers, the friendly Owl/museum curator of Animal Crossing. The stuff you donate will be visible in cool aquariums, so you'll always be incentivized to head on out and dive like a pro.

As you can imagine, there's heaps of new encounters to chase after, too, as well as new bits of clothing and items to gather. There's lots that you'll need to find for yourself, as Nintendo doesn't drop everything in trailers themselves: you know what you need to do, right?

By the way, we did also get an announcement that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will get an additional Summer Update, and that it's slated for early August! Plenty to look forward to, then.

What about the Sea Creatures in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Before you head on over to Animal Crossing: New Horizons and start diving for awesome sea creatures, you should know that these bad boys are on a seasonal rotation. Down below, you'll find a selection of important questions you might have about sea creatures in Animal Crossing, so hopefully we'll help you out with whatever question-marks you might yet have!

How many Sea Creatures are there in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

According to the wiki-page, Nintendo has prepared 40 sea creatures for New Horizons! As we said, though, not all of them are available right now, in July, and it seems that Nintendo wants completionist players to engage with the game during the whole year, if they wish to complete their museum collections in a timely manner.

What Sea Creatures can I catch in July?

We're glad you asked! First, here's the July sea creature shortlist for the Northern hemisphere:

  • Seaweed
  • Sea Grapes
  • Sea Star
  • Sea Urchin
  • State Pencil Urchin
  • Sea Anemone
  • Moon Jellyfish
  • Sea Slug
  • Pearl Oyster
  • Mussel
  • Scallop
  • Whelk
  • Abalone
  • Gigas Giant Clam
  • Octopus
  • Vampire Squid
  • Gazami Crab
  • Acorn Barnacle
  • Tiger Prawn
  • Mantis Shrimp
  • Giant Isopod
  • Horseshoe Crab
  • Sea Pineapple
  • Spotted Garden Eel

Now, for the Southern hemisphere:

  • Seaweed
  • Sea Cucumber
  • Sea Pig
  • Sea Star
  • Sea Anemone
  • Sea Slug
  • Pearl Oyster
  • Oyster
  • Scallop
  • Whelk
  • Abalone
  • Octopus
  • Dungeness Crab
  • Snow Crab
  • Red King Crab
  • Acorn Barnacle
  • Sweet Shrimp
  • Mantis Shrimp
  • Lobster
  • Venus' Flower Basket

After July, the Northern hemisphere players will no longer be able to gather Seaweed, while the Southern hemisphere players will lose access to Abalone and Lobster sea creatures. Be sure to focus on those first, if you end up running out of time!

We expect for Animal Crossing sea creatures to rotate in and out of being readily available on a monthly basis, so don't worry about gathering everything. It'll come in due time! If you're looking for the exact times in which you can dive for specific items, be sure to consult the game's wiki pages!
